Ajax sack Alfred Schreuder after 7 months in charge

Ajax have sacked their head coach Alfred Schreuder after a winless run of seven games in the Eredivisie. He had signed a two-year contract with the club this summer, replacing Erik Ten Hag who left to join Manchester United.

And now, they have decided to part ways with him and take a new direction. It was a rather crude statement from the Dutch side, who felt like there was no progress under Schreuder.

Alfred Schreuder sacked by Ajax after disappointing results

“This is a painful decision, but it’s necessary,” Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said in a statement. “Regardless of the good start to the season, we lost a lot of unnecessary points. The football itself was precarious too.

“Due to the World Cup, we had an early and long break during the winter. We gave Alfred our time and trust to change the way things were going. It became clear to us that he could not change the tide.”

The dropped points might prove very costly to Ajax at the end of the season. They might miss out on the Eredivisie title this year, as they are currently seven points behind their rivals Feyenoord, who sit at the top of the table.

The last game that Ajax won was against RKC Waalwijk on Oct. 23, and they have drawn their last six games. The board believes that they have a team which can win the title. And without the right direction, this will not be possible. No replacement has been announced for Alfred Schreuder as of yet, but one can be expected soon.
