The Galaxy Z Fold4, Samsung’s flagship folding device, was released in August 2022. It demonstrates a more advanced version of their folding screen technology. Samsung Display debuted a new prototype display and hinge that can rotate 360 degrees at CES 2023.

The ‘Flex In & Out’ display will allow the user to fold the display inward and outward, implying that the hinge will be designed differently. According to reports, the crease created by such a display will be more subtle than the current folding screen technology. The hinge design, also known as a ‘water-drop hinge,’ will allow the display to fold inward and form a looser shape.

It should be noted that this is not the first time Samsung has unveiled a ‘Flex In & Out’ display at an event.

In the year 2021, the company previously displayed a similar display in Korea. The new display can fold both inward and outward, whereas the older display can only fold like an “S” with segments.

The new 360-degree folding display could make its way onto the Galaxy Z Fold5, which is expected to be released later this year alongside the Galaxy Z Flip5. The new hinge would also mean that the fold crease would be more subtle than on the Galaxy Z Fold4. Only time will tell if Samsung can maintain its lead in the folding device market, as the company’s Z series smartphones currently dominate the market.
