2022-23 Premier League: Man City, Liverpool favoured once again for title

The Premier League is finally back. The elite league in the world of football is always an incredible showpiece of talent, physical prowess and perfect tactics, and this season isn’t going to be different. The tournament started in early August and will include a midseason break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with the final game taking place on the weekend of November 12–13 and the first game taking place on December 26, 2022, just after the World Cup final.

Manchester City won the 2021–22 Premier League title after a thrilling conclusion that saw them finish one point ahead of Liverpool on the last day. The team secured the championship with a comeback victory over Aston Villa on Championship Sunday, giving them the one-point edge in the league table. Not only that but Manchester City have won four of the last five Premier League titles.

In 2022–23, City will be adamant about retaining their title, but Liverpool will be out for vengeance, and there may be further challengers as well. The opening few games of the season gave fans an early peek at both clubs attempting to win the Premier League title and those just trying to hang on.

It’s hardly surprising that many believe Pep Guardiola’s team can win the Premier League championship for a third straight year. However, expect Liverpool and Chelsea to be in the running as well. Both clubs were active during the summer transfer window, bringing in high-profile players and improving already star-studded squads.

Manchester City

Manchester City are the overwhelming favourites to win the 2022-23 Premier League, currently at 4/11 odds for the title. With one of the best managers in football history at the helm, City certainly have what it takes to win the league for the third consecutive season.

Along with returning great players like Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, and Ilkay Gundogan, the team also made one of the biggest acquisitions to world football over the summer: Man City and Borussia Dortmund came to a transfer agreement for one of the best young strikers in the world, Erling Haaland. In addition, City added Kalvin Phillips to help the midfield, while Julian Alvarez will add more offensive depth.

Liverpool

After battling for last season’s title up until the last match, Liverpool are once again in contention, as the club is the second-favourite to win the 2022-23 Premier League title, at 44/5 odds. Liverpool will be especially motivated to win the league in 2022–23 after missing out on the quadruple last season and having to settle for the FA Cup and League Cup.

Sadio Mane’s exit to Bayern Munich is a setback, but Klopp will be hoping that Darwin Nunez, a new acquisition, adjusts fast, much like Luis Diaz did last year. Given the frequency of injuries to the team’s midfielders over the previous few weeks, it is concerning that Liverpool have not yet strengthened the midfield. However, Jürgen Klopp should have this team within striking distance of another title push.

Arsenal

Currently at 27/2 odds to win the league, Arsenal are also among the top contenders for the Premier League title. After a few seasons of disappointing campaigns, the Londoner side is back at title contention, with a squad full of young, talented players led by the likes of Martin Ødegaard.

The team was able to make important signings in the transfer window, including former Manchester City forward and Brazil international Gabriel Jesus. Under manager Miker Arteta, a former Gunner, Arsenal can put up a good fight at the top of the league table.

Tottenham Hotspur

The Spurs close the list of the favourites to win the Premier League, as the team is at 18 odds to do so. Although it is widely recognized that Tottenham hasn’t won the league since 1961, there is a genuine air of hope surrounding the team with Antonio Conte in charge. With players like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Tottenham is capable of posing serious challenges to defences. The addition of Yves Bissouma gives them more depth in the midfield and Ivan Perisic will contribute with experience and endurance. Conte has access to a multitude of attacking potential, particularly after the high-profile Richarlison acquisition, which was an even bigger bonus.
