Fernando Santos has stepped down as the head coach of the Portugal national team only five days after their exit from the 2022 World Cup. The coach was criticised for benching Cristiano Ronaldo in the 1-0 loss against Morocco that led to them being eliminated.

And despite his contributions to the country, his eight year spell in charge of the national team has now been brought to an end.

Fernando Santos steps down as Portugal head coach

โ€œIt was an honour to have a coach and a person like Fernando Santos at the head of the National Team,โ€ a statement from the Portuguese FA read.

โ€œThe FPF thanks Fernando Santos and his technical team for the services provided over eight unique years and believes that this thanks is also made on behalf of the Portuguese people. The FPF Board will now begin the process of choosing the next national coach.โ€

During his time in charge, Santos became the first coach to win a major trophy with the team. He first guided Portugal to the 2016 Euros, before helping the team win the inaugural 2019 Nations League to add to their tally. However, he could not find a way to advance past a determined Morocco in the quarter finals.

The FPF are searching for a new coach now, and Jose Mourinho has been linked as one of the possible candidates. But, the special one remains committed to Roma for the time being. And whether or not he will be allowed to simultaneously manage the national team is up in the air as well.
