Belgium captain Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from the national team, following the 2022 World Cup. The Red Devils exited the tournament at the group stage, finishing third. And following the disappointing run in Qatar, the Real Madrid winger has called time on his career with the country.

Since making his debut in 2008, Hazard has made 126 appearances for Belgium, scoring 33 goals. The talismanic winger was unable to add to his tally during the World Cup, and has announced his decision via social media.

Eden Hazard announces retirement from Belgian national team after 2022 World Cup

“A page turns today… Thank you for your love,” Hazard said on his Instagram account on Wednesday. “Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008.

“I have decided to put an end to my international career. The succession is ready. I will miss you….#onestensemble.”

Eden Hazard follows Belgian national team head coach Roberto Martinez to exit following the World Cup. The coach announced his departure shortly after the premature end to their campaign, and the captain of the national team has followed suit.

The 31-year-old hasn’t been the same since leaving Chelsea. And even though he has shown a few glimpses of his former self, his impact on the game has diminished significantly. Injuries have taken a toll on his game, and the third placed finish in 2018 remains his best achievement while playing for Belgium.
