Spain 1-1 Germany: Fullkrug equaliser keeps qualification hopes alive

Spain and Germany played out a 1-1 draw, in what was one of the most highly anticipated group stage matches of the 2022 World Cup. Luis Enrique’s side produced a fiery display and could have won the game.

However, they were held to a draw by Hansi Flick’s Germany, who needed at least a draw to save themselves. In doing so, the 2010 champions have been denied passage into the knockout stages while the 2014 winners have a lifeline.

Spain vs Germany ends in a draw

Jamal Musiala was the brightest spark on the field for Germany, with his close control and vision posing a real attacking threat. He became the youngest German player since 1966 to assist a goal in the World Cup, a record previously held by his Bayern Munich and national teammate, Thomas Muller.

The veteran was on the field, but failed to provide a significant impact up front. Spain were held up by the phenomenal midfield partnership from Pedri and Gavi, who set a very high tempo and always looked dangerous going forward.

Alvaro Morata scored for Spain as a substitute for the second straight game, while Niclas Fullkrug scored his first-ever World Cup goal to preserve Germany’s hopes. They will qualify if Spain beat Japan and they can beat Costa Rica.
