2022 World Cup: Asian and African teams bring huge surprises to Qatar

The 2022 World Cup has been anything but predictable so far. Sure, heading into the tournament, Argentina, Germany and Uruguay were expected to win their games against opposition from Asia and Africa. However, the results have been surprising to say the least.

First, Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina and ended their 36-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 win. Only one day later, we saw Germany fall to Japan in a 2-1 defeat very similar to the 2014 finalists.

Most recently, Uruguay were held to a 0-0 draw against South Korea while Tunisia held Denmark to a 0-0 draw. The common theme, as a result, is the underdogs performing well above expectations and denying the historically big teams an easy win.

With matchday one of the World Cup played to a conclusion, there are only two games to play for the teams to secure qualification. And it will be very interesting to see how things pan out for the big teams.

Argentina have been saved by Poland and Mexico playing out a goalless draw to reduce the points difference. Germany, on the other hand, have not been so lucky, with both Spain and Japan on three points. Uruguay and South Korea both have a strong chance of making the last 16, since they are both on a point each.
