Olivier Giroud scored a brace for France in their opening World Cup game to defeat Australia 4-1. In doing so, the AC Milan striker became not only France’s oldest goalscorer at the age of 36. But, he also tied Thierry Henry as the leading goalscorer in the country’s history with 51 to his name.

The former Chelsea forward has had to battle critics his entire career, and didn’t make a senior appearance for the national team until 25. Now, he is without a doubt, in the history books as one of the greats for the country.

Olivier Giroud helps defending champions start World Cup strong

With Karim Benzema and Christopher Nkunku ruled out with injury only days prior to their World Cup opener, things appeared worrisome for Didier Deschamps. However, Olivier Giroud has made us forget about their absence so far.

Kylian Mbappe was named the man of the match for a superb display, although it can be argued that Giroud deserved the award just as much, if not more.

The French national team were in position to suffer the World Cup winners’ curse which has plagued them in the past as well. But given the way they are playing, it might just be baseless as they appear the favourites to win the group.
