In 1995, under Jagmohan Dalmiya, resisted Doordarshan which back then used to telecast cricket matches in India. In the same year, BCCI won broadcasting rights and private channels were opened. In the early 2000s, Indian cricket and its commercial revenue grew significantly.
In the first deal, the board, sold the television rights for India and England bilateral series to a foreign company called TWI, also known as Trans World International. Doordarshan had to pay TWI $1 million for the rights to telecast matches in India.
The Star Sports Network telecasts the match on television and Disney+ Hotstar streams the games digitally.
How did BCCI become the richest cricket board in the world?
BCCI’s main revenue is earned in these ways:1. Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL)2. Selling Broadcasting rights of the matches (IPL and WPL)3. BCCI earns around Rs 250 crores from the broadcasting revenue by ICC from participating in global events.4. The Board’s association with various sponsors as the jersey sponsor, title sponsor etc.
The addition of two new franchises, Lucknow and Ahmedabad increased the revenue of IPL in 2022. Reportedly, Lucknow was bought by RPSG for Rs 7.090 crores.
BCCI is also earning more than 15 cores per IPL match from broadcasting rights and sponsors. IPL is the biggest T20 league in the world that contributes exponentially to BCCI. They have now also started the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
