Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will receive a “Full Premium Release” in 2023

According to Activision’s most recent financial filing, a paid expansion for Infinity Ward’s popular shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, is in the works. Not only is a new expansion planned for Modern Warfare 2, but numerous well-known soccer players will also be appearing in an upcoming campaign, according to a tweet from early November.

The most recent installment of Activision’s nearly 20-year-old military shooter series is called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Modern Warfare 2 is Infinity Ward’s most recent attempt to keep the juggernaut of a franchise relevant in a gaming landscape littered with military shooters.

It features a world-hopping campaign mode that sees players engaged in combat in locations ranging from the US-Mexico border to a legally questionable recreation of The Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam. Despite a pre-release open beta that was periodically plagued by bugs and other technical issues, the game has largely garnered excellent feedback from players and reviewers after its release.

According to a tweet from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, Sledgehammer’s next Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 expansion is expected to arrive in 2023. Activision’s most recent financial filing contained a section that stated the publisher is working on “the next full premium release in the blockbuster annual series,” which sparked this rumor. Following the announcement that Modern Warfare 2 set a new record for the franchise by earning over $1 billion in revenue in its first ten days, any expansion for the popular shooter would probably be a surefire moneymaker for Activision.

The “full premium release” was not discussed in detail in the earnings report, but according to Activision, players should anticipate a significant amount of additional content. The source also suggests additional Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 free-to-play activities for franchise enthusiasts in addition to the new material. This claim might allude to the release of brand-new Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 maps, as hinted at via an Easter egg in Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has already established itself as a huge success with many gamers worldwide, despite the numerous problems present in the game’s multiplayer and campaign modes that continue to annoy some players. If a new expansion can tie up some of the loose ends from Modern Warfare 2’s campaign mode while also enhancing the series’ signature multiplayer combat and tossing in a good helping of bug fixes for good measure, then the iconic shooter from Activision’s seems almost certain to maintain its meteoric rise to fame.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
