Rangers are now the worst team in the Champions League

Rangers have matched the record for the worst Champions League campaign of all-time. The Scottish side ended their European run with no points, and a goal difference of -20.

They have equalled the record set by Dinamo Zagreb in 2011, and have only scored two goals in six matches while conceding 22. Their last game in the Champions League ended in a 3-1 defeat against Ajax

Rangers match record for the worst Champions League campaign

There was a slim chance that Rangers could have avoided this unwanted record. And the reason behind that is Viktoria Plzen’s presence in the group of death with Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Inter Milan.

The Czech Republic side finished with no points as well, but scored two goals against Barcelona in their 4-2 loss. And this reduced their goal difference to -19. Which means that Rangers were rooted to the bottom, with the most goals conceded.

“We have been doing well in Europe the last three years, but we are still not at the same level as Ajax,” manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst said.

“We are developing and that’s the way it is. It is the way the differences are in Europe at the moment.

“If you see Ajax, the players overall are from a higher level, their budget is higher.

“They bought players for £100m. They bought a not bad defender (Calvin Bassey) from us last season.

“We cannot compare ourselves to Ajax but we can compete with them on the day, especially at home at Ibrox.”
