Here’s how Newcastle United used 6 substitutes in their 4-0 win vs Aston Villa

Newcastle United became the first team in the Premier League to use six substitutes in a game. The Magpies did this in their 4-0 win against Aston Villa this past weekend.

This was due to a new rule that was introduced in the English top flight this very season. And the loophole allowed Eddie Howe’s side to change one more player than allowed normally.

How did Newcastle United  use six substitutes in one match

The new rule introduced in the Premier League was regarding the concussion protocol. According to the new rule, if a team makes a concussion substitution, then their opponents will also be allowed an extra change.

In the 35th minute, Emiliano Martinez was substituted for Robin Olsen due to a potential concussion. And this allowed the Magpies to leverage the ruling in their favour and make six changes in the game. All substitutions were made late in the second half.

Callum Wilson was on fire in that game, scoring two goals and an assist while Joelinton and Miguel Almiron added to the scoresheet to make it four. With their win, Newcastle United are now in fourth place, and are emerging as contenders for European spots this season.
