A tribute to Virender Sehwag on his 44th birthday: The only Indian with two triple centuries in Test

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag celebrated his 44th birthday this Thursday. He’s the only Indian batter who mustered triple hundreds and scored the highest runs in ODI as a skipper (219). His ODI strike rate was 104.34.

From Sachin Tendulkar to Yuvaraj Singh, he got birthday wishes on Twitter.

Let’s have a look at the records that he created in his career that spanned over 12 years.

1. Virender Sehwag scored 219 runs against West Indies in an ODI in Indore in 2011. This was the highest individual score by a captain in ODI cricket.
2. He has smashed 90 sixes for India in Test cricket which is the highest by a batter. MS Dhoni is at the second position hitting 78 sixes in Test cricket for India.
3. His batting strike rate was of 82.23 in test cricket which is the highest among the other batters who smashed 2000 runs.
4. He has a spectacular record of converting 11 consecutive centuries into 150-plus runs in Test cricket. In the timeline of December 2003 and October 2009, he scored 11 tests hundreds. The numbers were 195, 309, 155, 164, 173, 201, 254, 180, 151, 319 and 201*. 
5. It took him 278 balls to score his second triple-hundred against South Africa in Chennai in 2008. This was the fastest triple hundred in terms of deliveries in test cricket.

During his career, he received the Padma Shri award from President Pratibha Patil. In the longer format, he smashed 8586 runs with a spectacular average of approximately 50 in the 104 Tests that he played for the Indian cricket team.

Sehwag’s best opening pair were Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Gautam Gambir.

Virender Sehwag was dropped from ODI in 2008. After three years in the 2011 World Cup, he played a crucial role. His last ODI and Test match was in 2013. After two years he retired from international cricket.
