Rajeev Chaba: MG Motor India anticipates turning a profit on increased sales in the upcoming year

MG Motor India‘s President and Managing Director Rajeev Chaba stated on Monday that the firm anticipates turning a profit next year as it seeks to double its sales with increased production capacity.

The business, which has been adversely affected by severe supply chain restrictions, hopes to end the current year with sales of between 55,000 and 56,000.

Based on the sources, Rajeev Chaba stated that they intend to double their volumes the next year. If they sell 56,000 units this year and aim to sell more than 100,000 units in 2023. They believe that next year will unquestionably be a good year for them as a result.

He mentioned that the business is about finished expanding its capacity at its Halol-based production facility in Gujarat, which will enable it to increase deliveries to dealers in the upcoming year.

The annual production capacity of the Halol facility, which MG Motor acquired from General Motors, has increased from 65,000 units to 1.25 lakh units as of late. According to Rajeev Chaba, sales should reach 55,000–56,00 units this year, up from the 40,000 units they sold previous year. Therefore, it is hoped that the factory would be fully operational and profitable in 2023. They have been losing money up until now, but they should turn a small profit next year.

He added that if they succeed, it will be four years from their initial introduction in the nation, which is a significant milestone for them. In 2019, the business launched “Hector,” its first product, in India.

About the Second Facility

According to the sources, when asked about the company’s plans for a second production site in the nation, Rajeev Chaba responded that other parties are still being consulted. All possibilities, including contract manufacturing, brownfield expansion, and opening a new facility, are being discussed, he continued.

Furthermore, when questioned about the delay in finalizing the second plant, Chaba responded that they needed to be cautious about capacity expansion because the auto industry is still mostly driven by the top three players and they wanted to make sure to take care of Halol capacity expansion first.

He also said that they are moving forward one step at a time. Filling the Halol capacity and turning a profit are therefore the main goals. Volumes are crucial, but maintaining sustainable operations is also essential.

MG Motor’s Investment in the Country

Sources claimed that over Rs 3,500 crore have been invested by the corporation in the nation thus far. Regarding the company’s product strategy, Rajeev Chaba said that its long-term goal is to become a respectably significant EV player.

According to Chaba, they brought in ZS EV three years ago because they brought in EV far sooner than other players did. Unfortunately, there are supply limitations because of shortages.

He pointed out that the company’s sales of electric vehicles will increase overall sales if its second product in the segment—an cheap EV—is released in the April–June timeframe of the following year.

Focusing on EV Segment

Rajeev Chaba added that the growth they anticipate for EV sales is that they will be 70–80% higher this year than they were last year, and 70–80% higher in 2023 than they were in 2022. After the second EV is introduced the following year, 20–25 percent of sales should, ideally, come from the EV category the following year. The corporation is still more interested in electric vehicles than traditional internal combustion engines.

Because electric vehicles represent the future, according to Rajeev Chaba, they are more focused on them. They will therefore have a bias in favor of EVs since they believe they are the way of the future. And the business thinks that the ecosystem may be built by collaborating with all partners who share its values.

The fourth season of the MG Developer Program & Grant was introduced on Monday by MG Motor India and its consortium partners (MGDP). The program for this year will concentrate on enhancing the platform for innovation for startups, developers, and innovators.

According to Rajeev Chaba, the fourth season of the MGDP aims to encourage good change in the sector by providing a forum for EV innovators from all around the nation to network and develop creative ideas. This platform aims to bring together the top minds in the sector to collaborate on innovative ideas that could transform the EV market.
