Sony plans to sold nearly 2 million PSVR 2 headsets by March 2023

According to insiders cited by Bloomberg, Sony has already begun mass producing PlayStation VR2 headsets and will maintain a rapid rate of manufacturing until the device is released early next year.

By March 2023, 2 million headsets are expected to be sold. Based on the first round of sales, production will be accelerated after launch. The corporation is allegedly planning a significant marketing campaign and needs to have units of both the PS4 and PS5 consoles available in stores, so it is also stocking up on both devices.

Because not enough people own VR headsets, game creators are unable to create VR content, which in turn prevents users from purchasing headsets. The first issue will be resolved with a strong marketing campaign, and Sony has a solution for the second one as well.

A PSVR2 version of the Horizon franchise’s Call of the Mountain VR game has previously been announced. More than 20 VR games are currently under development from both internal and outside developers.

Sony is significantly more sure about this PSVR’s 2 million manufacturing target than it was about the first PSVR, which took eight months to reach one million shipments. It might ultimately fall short of the Meta Quest 2, which sold 2.8 million units in its first three months of release (that was a while ago, the total is now 17 million, according to data from IDC).

Given that the PSVR2 will be far more advanced than its predecessor, some people are concerned about the cost. The initial price of the Quest 2 was recently increased by $100 by Meta, though, providing Sony some breathing room by raising the starting price to $400. Additionally, the first PSVR launched at a price of $400.

The PSVR2 requires a PlayStation 5 console, whereas the Quest is a standalone headset (though it can also be used with PCs), so the entry hurdle for those who don’t already own a PS5 will be greater (as a reminder, Sony recently increased the PS5 price in most regions).
