Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 EV with 857 km range launched in India

After much anticipation, Mercedes-Benz launched the EQS 580 4MATIC EV at ₹1.55 crore (ex-showroom). This locally-assembled Completely-Knocked Down (CKD) version is the second iteration of the EQS to arrive in India, after the full-fat AMG EQS 53 that was launched here last month.

And compared to the EQS 53, which retails at ₹2.45 crore (ex-showroom) since it is imported as a CBU, the EQS 53 is priced at about ₹90 lakh less. However, what makes the EQS 580 standout is the fact that it is officially India’s longest-range EV, with an ARAI-certified range of 857kms.

Today Mercedes-Benz launched its third all-electric vehicle EQS 580 4MATIC in India. The other electric vehicles introduced by the company include the all electric SUV EQC and the performance sedan AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+. However, this is the first Made in India, for India electric vehicle from the brand, it is being manufactured in the Mercedes-Benz India facility in Chakan, Pune.

The new all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic is built on the Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA2) and features an LED DRL that spans across the width of the car, a heavily curved roofline, and gets five exterior color choices with 20-inch wheels. The interior gets a dual-tone theme with a Brown Walnut trim, and a 56-inch single-piece MBUX Hyperscreen, which consists of three screens: a 12.3-inch driver display, 17.7-inch infotainment, and a 12.3-inch front passenger touchscreen.

Four motors, one for each axle, and a lithium-ion battery provide propulsion for the Mercedes EQS 580. According to Mercedes, the EQS 580 can go up to 857 kilometres on a single charge and has been certified by the ARAI. It boasts the greatest claimed range of any electric vehicle in India. With 523 bhp of peak power and 856 Nm of peak torque, it is also among the most powerful electric vehicles in India. Sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h takes around 4 seconds.

Speaking on the occasion, Martin Schwenk, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said, “The EQS 580 4MATIC is our first locally manufactured EV in India and will play a pivotal role in driving our ambitious EV plans for the market. It is a perfect blend of technology, luxury and safety, pioneering numerous tech features for our customers. India is the first country outside Germany to manufacture the EQS 580 4MATIC, and this unique distinction underpins Mercedes-Benz India’s deep customer commitment and long-term vision for developing the luxury EV market here.”

Other features include rear wheel steering, a panoramic sunroof, front seats with massage function, a Head-Up Display, wireless charging for front and rear occupants, Burmester sound system, digital LED headlights, and airmatic semi-active suspension amongst others. Safety features are impressive as well, as the new Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic gets nine airbags, active steering assist, lane keeping assist, active parking assist, and pre-safe impulse along with all the usual electronic aids.

The EQS 580 4MATIC has a 2 year/30,000 km service interval. The company is offering 8-years/unlimited kms battery warranty. For sale in India, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 will compete with high-end EVs like the Porsche Taycan EV and the Audi e-tron GT. Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC launched in India at a price of Rs 1.55 crore.
