Premier League to play English national anthem and pay tribute to Queen in the 70th minute

The Premier League games this weekend will have the England national anthem played before kickoff in memory of the Queen. The crowd will also participate in an applause in the 70th minute to mark the years of the Queen’s rule. Advertisement boards will also have tributes at the 70th minute of games during the applause.

God Save The King will be played over the PA system in some stadiums, while others will invite singers to perform the anthem. The traditional handshakes before the game will also not take place prior to kick off.

Premier League to play English national anthem before kickoff

Players have been asked to wear a black armband on the pitch, while managers have been asked to wear a suit on the dugout. However, this is not compulsory as things stand.

As has been the case with Champions League games, both teams will also observe a moment of silence before kickoff as part of the mourning. In addition, flags at stadiums will be at half mast throughout the weekend.

Rangers, Chelsea and Manchester City had turned in requests to play God Save The King during their Champions League games, but it was turned down. Rangers went ahead and played the anthem anyway.

But alongside the Premier League, it now remains to be seen whether Scottish clubs will also adopt the same protocol.
