Premier League postpones fixtures for the weekend following Queen Elizabeth’s death

The Premier League has suspended all matches for the weekend, in mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth ii. The Women’s League, Championship and EFL competitions have also followed suit and have postponed the fixtures that were scheduled to go ahead this weekend.

This includes the game on Monday evening as well, which will all be replayed at a later date.

Premier League matches for the weekend called off

Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive, said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation, but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

Alongside the English Premier League, games in the Scottish Premier League are also expected to be called off as a mark of respect to the Queen.

She died peacefully at the age of 96, at her Balmoral castle on Thursday. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and the world’s oldest head of state. Tributes have been pouring in from across the world, while the UK has kept their flags at half mast following the end of Her Majesty’s reign.
