In March 2020, Elysian Realm (@KittyYYuko) provided some preliminary details regarding Nvidia’s Ampere that proved to be rather accurate (1, 2). The leaker is back with what appears to be an image of Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition board. Despite having a solid track record, the source of the photograph is unofficial, therefore it should be used with caution. The image generates more questions than it does solutions.

The board’s continued use of the GeForce RTX 30-series products’ design language is the first thing that draws the eye to the image (which are among the best gaming graphics cards today, so to speak). Another item that stands out right away is the odd font used for the model number “4080.” Due to the font’s similarity to the font used by Nvidia on its website, as highlighted by VideoCardz, it could not be obvious that this is a false image (and might suggest that the board is genuine).

rtx 4080

The board is dual-wide (like the RTX 3080), but it resembles the GeForce RTX 3090/3090 Ti in height and length. Additionally, it has a new fan with improved blades, suggesting that this is a fresh board rather than a GeForce RTX 30-series card with a 4080 tag. The fan appears to be thicker than the one used by the dual-slot GeForce RTX 3080 and appears to be the same size as the one on the GeForce RTX 3090 (which makes sense). As a result, it protrudes more than it does on the RTX 3080.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 is based on AD103 GPU

We know that the model RTX 4080 is expected to be based on the AD103 graphics processing unit, which is not the largest and most power-hungry GPU in the lineup, according to a prior leak about Nvidia’s impending GeForce RTX 40-series products. As a result, flagship boards like those using Nvidia’s ‘big ferocious’ GA102 GPUs do not need a sizable cooling system (aka BFGPUs). The use of a “taller” dual-wide heatsink appears to be warranted because AD103 is anticipated to consume more power than Nvidia’s GA103/104 (which is utilised for GeForce RTX 3080 devices).
