Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City: Klopp completes domestic trophy set with Community Shield win in 100th edition

Liverpool defeated Manchester City 3-1 at the King Power Stadium to win the 100th edition of the Community Shield. The curtain raiser for the 22/23 season saw the Premier League champions take on the FA Cup winners, and the latter prevailed this time.

Erling Haaland got his first start for Manchester City in an official game, but was unable to score. He had several great opportunities throughout the game, including an open goal in the dying stages, but it just wasn’t the Norwegian’s day as he struggled despite getting into some great positions.

The Merseysiders took the lead courtesy of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who shot from distance. The ball was helped on by Nathan Ake, as he tried to head it away, and Ederson could do little to keep it out.

In the second half, Julian Alvarez scored his first goal for the Cityzens. The youngster tapped the ball following a scramble involving Liverpool keeper Adrian.

The Reds earned a penalty after a clear handball by Ruben Dias in the penalty area. Salah made no mistake from the spot to restore the lead for his side, and Darwin Nunez scored the final goal to seal the win for his new team.

In what has been often labelled a ‘glorified pre-season friendly’, the two teams still showed signs of rustiness. But the level that they are operating on is by far unparalleled, and it will be very entertaining to see them at their best as the season rolls on.
