Bengali director Tarun Majumdar passes away due to age-related ailments

The veteran Bengali director Tarun Majumdar who is popularly known for his 1976 film ‘Balika Badhu’ passed away at the age of 92. In SSKM hospital in Kolkata on Monday. The director has been undergoing treatment at the state-run in SSKM for the last few days. Last month his doctor said that he was ‘very critical’ amid kidney and heart-related problems. 

The West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said he had been saddened by knowing the demises of Majumdar. He just reiterated, “The classics like ‘Dadar Kirti’ and ‘Balika Badhu’ are eternally imbibed in our hearts and earned him four National Awards and Padma Shri in 1990,” 


The director Sujoy Ghosh is popular for the thrillers Kahaani’, ‘Bob Biswas, and Badla’ that mourned the demise of Majumdar. Ge said that the late filmmaker had been one of the greatest storytellers from whose movies he just learned. He has captioned, “Tapan Sinha, Rajen Tarafdar, Tarun Majumdar, and Rituparna Ghose are textbooks’ the storytelling,” 

The actor Prosenjit Chatterjee also tweeted, “Heartfelt condolences to Jethu’s family and well-wishers.” Sujoy Ghosh also added, “Tarun Majumdar moves on. One of the greatest storytellers and whose films I learned from,”   

The Bengali actor Jeet said the contribution of the late director to Indian Cinema will always remain in the hearts of people. 

The director was born on 8th January 1931, in the Bengal Presidency of British India, the father of late director  Birendranath Majumdar was a freedom fighter. The filmmaker made his directorial debut alongside  Sachin Mukherji and Dilip Mukherji having the same on-screen name Yatrik along with the 1959 Bengali film ‘Chaowa Pawa’. The latest director soon reaches the top of fame as a filmmaker compelling the tales that depict the life of middle-class families.  the director was a Marxist from heart, he had launched many actors and actresses like Moushumi Chatterjee, Late tapas Paul, Debashree Roy, and his own wife Sandhya Roy.

Tarun Majumdar’s Works 

Tarun Majumdar gave some directorial blockbusters like ‘Balika Badhu (1976)’, ‘Kuheli (1971)’, ‘Shriman Prithviraj (1972)’, ‘Dadar Kirti (1980)’, ‘Bhalobasha Bhalobasha (1985), and ‘Apan Amar Apan (1990)’.  There are some other notable works that contain, ‘Smriti Tuku Thak (1960)’, ‘Palatak (1963)’, ‘Fuleswari (1974)’, and ‘Ganadevata (1978)’.

Tarun Majumdar’s Achievements

Tarun Majumdar received Padma Shri in 1990 and also got five Filmfare awards containing the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. In 2015, talking about the film he said, “I have always been intrigued by human relationships and values. I think the quest of a man is to become a better human being. I think I understand the middle-class milieu better and hence interpreted it in various ways on celluloid.” 

Tarun Majumdar has four National Film Awards for his contribution to Kancher Swargo, Nimantran Ganadevata, and Aranya Aamar. We all wish peace for his soul.
