Barcelona rejected a €65m bid for Sergi Roberto last summer

Sergi Roberto has officially signed a new contract with Barcelona, extending his stay at the club for another year. The player’s new deal runs until June 2023, and contains a release clause worth €400 million.

As part of his new deal, he has taken a 60% pay cut to remain for another season. This is as part of Barcelona’s measures to reduce their wage bill by the end of the transfer window so that they can register new players.

“FC Barcelona and the player Sergi Roberto have reached an agreement to extend his contract until 30 June 2023. The player’s buy out clause will be set at 400 million euros”, Barcelona’s official website said.

Roberto has been at the club since he was 14 years old. This past season, he struggled for game time after being plagued by injuries. As a result, he only featured 12 times across all competitions.

With new players being recruited in midfield and defense, the 30-year-old will be facing stiff competition for a place in the line-up. But, given the promise of a restart ahead of the new campaign, he will be hopeful of making it into Xavi’s line-up next year.

According to Marca, Xavi insisted that the player stay on for another season, and was key to getting him to sign a new deal. He had other offers on the table, but was always clear about continuing with Barcelona.
