Diablo Immortal has turned into the Biggest Success Launch in the History of the Franchise

Following its official release on June 2, Diablo Immortal has been available for a week. Since then, the endless debate has raged about Diablo Immortal’s strengths and drawbacks, easily making it the most polarizing release of 2022.

Few would argue, however, that Diablo Immortal was destined to be a smash hit upon its initial release. Blizzard has recently verified this, stating that Diablo Immortal is the “biggest” Diablo launch in the franchise’s history.

Blizzard’s news was revealed on the official Diablo Immortal Twitter account. The warriors of Sanctuary were praised for making Diablo Immortal the “biggest launch in franchise history,” according to the statement. The preceding graph depicted the “biggest launch” in Diablo’s history included in further detail. It confirms that Diablo Immortal has been downloaded over 10 million times since its release. This, like so much else about Diablo Immortal, is bound to spark debate.

The problem is that Diablo Immortal is a free-to-play game. Everyone in the world can download Diablo Immortal for free, regardless of whether they intend to play it or commit much if any, time to it. In addition, all previous Diablo games were only available on PC. About a year after its PC release, Diablo 3 was published for PlayStation and Xbox platforms. To put it another way, the total number of installations during launch week isn’t a particularly fair comparison metric.

Blizzard, on the other hand, does not appear to have the authority to make a fair comparison in this case. The company wants to promote the idea that Diablo Immortal is a popular and successful game while also celebrating its success. It must also do so without igniting a new round of controversy. Total installs, on the other hand, are less likely to provoke a response than total hours played or total dollars spent.

Detractors of Diablo Immortal will point to this as proof that the free-to-play mobile game is losing its appeal. For example, Diablo 3 is thought to have sold more than 30 million copies globally, a figure that has climbed due to new content and platforms. Critics will say that Diablo Immortal’s player base will decline due to the game’s heavily monetized design.

Of course, Diablo Immortal’s early success may be seen in its ten million downloads. It isn’t, however, earth-shattering. There are over 100 previous mobile games with over 20 million installs, for example. Diablo Immortal still has a long way to go to make that list, and it will need much more effort to earn the faith of Diablo fans, who have been guaranteed that Diablo Immortal will be the franchise’s most successful launch.
