ISL: Roy Krishna leaves ATK Mohun Bagan

The 34-year-old Fijian striker Roy Krishna has now officially left the ISL team ATK Mohun Bagan. Moreover, there is no confirmation about his return to the Indian club yet.

While Roy Krishna experienced his first season in Indian football for ATK in 2019/20, he then served for the newly merged ISL team ATK Mohun Bagan in the next two seasons.

Roy Krishna dominated for ATK and ATK Mohun Bagan

In his first ISL season (2019/20), Krishna played a crucial role in ATK winning their third ISL trophy. Krishna finished that ISL season as the joint leading goal-scorer with 15 goals and joint third most assist-provider with six assists.

In his second ISL season (2020/21), while the Fijian served for the newly merged ATK Mohun Bagan, he ended that ISL season as the joint leading goal-scorer (14 goals) and joint leading assist provider (eight assists). ATK Mohun Bagan finished that ISL season as the runners-up (both in the league table and playoffs). He ultimately won the best player award of that ISL season by receiving the Hero of the League.

Krishna was also awarded the Best Football Player (Senior) during Mohun Bagan Day 2021.

While ATK Mohun Bagan ended their journey in the ISL 2021/22 in the semi-finals, Krishna finished as the joint 11th most goal-scorer (seven goals) and joint 10th most assist provider (four assists). He missed some late games of the season due to fitness issues.

Roy Krishna’s contract with ATKMB just ended. There is no news of a new contract with the Fijian striker as he just left Kolkata. The club has also officially posted a goodbye message for him.

As ATKMB have lost one of their most dependable foreign players, they now have to find out proper replacement soon.

Roy Krishna’s club future

Now, the big question is Roy Krishna’s future. According to some media reports, Bengaluru FC and East Bengal are fighting to sign the Fijian striker. Even some media reports have claimed that Bengaluru FC have a stronger chance to sign him for the next ISL season. Also, Mumbai City FC have reportedly targeted him as a new foreigner.

However, there is also a significant doubt about Krishna’s future presence in Indian football. While there is no news about his ISL return, he may choose to return to Australian football. A few Australian clubs are also interested in signing the Fijian forward.
