Here are your first looks at Gull-Winged Alpha 5 from DeLorean

The first photographs of DeLorean Motor Company’s Alpha 5 electric vehicle (EV), the brand’s attempt to resuscitate the DeLorean moniker in an all-electric form, have been released.

The Alpha 5 has its iconic gull-wing doors and can hit 60mph in roughly 2.99 seconds (or 88mph in 4.35 seconds, if you’re curious). It’s based on the famed ’80s-era DeLorean recognized for its appearance in Back to the Future.

Before we get into the details, it’s important to note that the company behind the Alpha 5 is not the same as the one behind the original DeLorean vehicles, which went out of business in 1982. The rights to the DeLorean brand were purchased by an unrelated Texas-based company that supplies replacement components to owners of classic DeLorean automobiles, and an all-electric rebirth was hinted at in April.

DeLorean Alpha 5 could be equipped with a 100-kilowatt-hour battery, giving it a range of 300 miles and a top speed of 155 mph

These specifications will be part of the “basic” performance model, according to DeLorean, but there’s no information on other performance tiers or pricing. With gull-winged doors and a slanted shape, the Alpha 5 pays homage to its gas-powered predecessor, but it trades an angular aspect for smoother contours and four seats instead of two. Despite some obvious alterations, DeLorean collaborated with Italdesign, the same Volkswagen-owned design firm that worked on the 1981 DMC-12’s design, and its interpretation of the electrified version takes it into the future.

The Alpha 5 will be unveiled to the public on DeLorean’s website tomorrow morning, but you can sign up now to receive a sneak glimpse at its photographs and features. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see the car in action since DeLorean will unveil the Alpha 5 on August 21st at Pebble Beach.
