AMD powers the world’s fastest Supercomputer with Exaflop Performance

When announced back in 2019, AMD was proud to power the touted world’s fastest Supercomputer called Frontier which would possess EPYC Rome CPUs based on Zen 2 architecture and RDNA2 GPUs. AMD collaborated with the U.S. Department of EnergyOak Ridge National Laboratory, and Cray Inc. to build the World’s Fastest Supercomputer.

The world’s fastest Supercomputer with Exaflop Performance is powered by AMD

Now, officially in 2022, AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct accelerators are now powering the first supercomputer to ever break the exascale barrier. So, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Frontier system ranked No. 1 on both the Top500 and Green500, coming with 1.102 exaflops of performance and 62.68 gigaflops/watt power efficiency.

Originally it was announced the supercomputer would have a horsepower up to 1.5 exaflops while in 2022, they have already crossed the exascale mark. This makes Frontier both the fastest and most energy-efficient supercomputer in the world. It’s also No. 1 on the HPL-AI list, with 6.86 exaflops of HPL-AI performance.

AMD continues to power the HPC Supercomputers worldwide

In other AMD EPYC and AMD Instinct MI200-powered systems, CSC’s LUMI supercomputer ranked third on both the Top500 and Green500 lists, with 152 petaflops of performance and 51.63 gigaflops/watt power-efficiency. The Adastra system at GENCI-CINES is No. 10 on the Top500 list and No. 4 on the Green500 list. These systems continue to highlight the performance and efficiency capabilities of the AMD Instinct accelerators at a node, cabinet, and system level.

With the incredible gain in performance gain brought by the AMD EPYC processors, AMD powers half of the top 10 fastest supercomputers in the world right now. This goes to show the Red team’s dominance over Intel in recent years and the massive architectural improvements it has done to make this possible.

There are 94 AMD systems on the list, a 95% year-over-year increase and unsurprisingly, more than half of the 38 new systems on the Top500 are powered by AMD. This is the first appearance of AMD Instinct accelerators, with seven systems on the list, accounting for a total of 1.329 exaflops of performance.

This almost equals the 1.337 exaflops of performance of all other accelerated systems on the list, combined. AMD powers the four most efficient computers in the world and eight of the top 10 and 17 of the top 20. Want to know more head over to AMD’s website to know more.
