AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D review – The best Gaming CPU?

The Red team announced its 8-core enhanced chip a few months ago and while it took some time to finally make its way into the market, and is now available in bulk so, we took a while to review the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. However, should you buy it for your new Gaming PC or wait for the next-gen?

This question might be the one you most probably would you ask yourself also look for answers online. Well, we are here to answer it for you whether the new AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is actually any good or just a marketing scheme to tackle Intel. On paper, it looks impressive though, and much better than the predecessor Ryzen 7 5800X now flooded with cache memory.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D review - The best Gaming CPU?

Yes, it does make a difference in gaming and without any major architectural changes, AMD is able to provide incredible IPC improvements and most importantly tackle the 12th Gen Core i9 series which are deemed to be the best CPUs for gaming as well as content creation. It’s tough for AMD because Intel has hurt them both in terms of gaming and multi-threaded performance this time, offering a lot of CPUs at affordable prices.

So, this AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D acts as the perfect scapegoat for the delayed Zen 4 based Ryzen 7000 processors. Now, do you actually need to buy it? Let’s find out:

Productivity

Well, there are only a few applications that actually do benefit from the massive increase in cache but if you do use applications like Photoshop, Blender, and others you will notice some difference over its predecessors but as most applications benefit from having more cores to crunch renders, the Alder Lake processors are a much better choice.

However, you will see in the benchmarks that there are no remarkable improvements when compared with the regular Ryzen 7 5800X but the newer chip costs almost Rs.10k more. So, recommending a Core i7-12700K makes more sense because it doesn’t deliver the best price-to-performance ratio you generally expect.

As you see in the benchmarks, the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D falls behind the regular Ryzen 7 5800X in some of the benchmarks which is quite weird. Practically speaking in terms of productivity benchmarks as you see there’s no real improvement to recommend it over the currently discounted Ryzen 7 5800X.

Gaming

The key highlight which AMD has been stressing about has to be the gaming performance of this processor with 3D V-cache thanks to its chip stacking technology jointly developed with TSMC. So, the massive increase in the cache doesn’t actually help a lot in synthetic benchmarks as you see but according to AMD beats the likes of Core i9-12900K.

However, if you have to compare you should actually do so against its own 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X which retails less than the price of this Ryzen 7 5800X3D. So, is it worth the hype to actually opt for this 8-core chip in 2022? Let’s find out in all of our recent benchmarks in triple-A titles:

  • Borderlands 3 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • CS GO - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • Cyberpunk 2077 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • Far Cry 6 - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • NFS Heat - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • Watch Dogs Legion - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in
  • World War Z - Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6700 XT - TechnoSports.co.in

As you see in the gaming benchmarks, the numbers are quite good but the difference between the regular Ryzen 7 5800X and this Ryzen 7 5800X3D reduces with high resolution and max quality. However, as tested out in our previous data in Cyberpunk 2022, at 1440p medium with Ryzen 9 5900X we used to get 81 FPS on average which has increased to 99 FPS just for the CPU difference.

However at 4K Medium, there’s only 1 FPS difference, which is very less and when compared in Borderlands 3, you will see there’s a dip in performance with new Ryzen 7 5800X3D, this is the same case with CS:GO as well.

However, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, you see a noticeable performance difference with the new Ryzen CPU, at 1440p Medium, the average FPS was 128 previously while now you get 152 FPS which is a huge bump. The difference further reduces at 4K but it is evident that not all games do actually benefit from the humongous increase in cache.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D review - The best Gaming CPU?

If AMD would have compared this Ryzen 7 5800X3D with the current Ryzen 9 5900X which retails at the same price that would have made more sense. However, you see indeed it’s much better than the regular Ryzen 7 5800X but gives similar and somewhat better performance to that of the Ryzen 9 5900X.

Verdict

Overall as you see, AMD’s claims are indeed true if you consider the gaming performance, however, buying a CPU for just some more frame rates doesn’t make a huge sense. However, in real life, the loss of 4 cores does make a difference in multi-threaded performance which for most will be the one to love for.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D review - The best Gaming CPU?

The mere practicality of this chip makes no sense for me honestly, because AMD is only targeting gamers with this processor and hardly any improvement you see in architecture or gen-on-gen. So, while there are some games that actually love the increase in cache but some don’t have any benefit actually.

Yes, it challenges the likes of the best-in-class 12th Gen Intel processors, however, the increased pricing doesn’t make it the best value-for-money offering. Recommending this Ryzen 7 5800X3D over any other chip is a tough job because we still believe that Ryzen 9 5900X is the best for its price or better to go Intel.

However, from the marketing standpoint of dubbing this Ryzen 7 5800X3D as the best gaming CPU is true though but now will you but it or not spending close to Rs.44k is your choice over the Rs.39k priced Ryzen 9 5900X.
