Brighton thrashes Manchester United by 4-0 to create their new top-flight record

Brighton created history last Saturday (7th May) after thrashing the Premier League giant Manchester United at home by 4-0. It was the biggest ever top-flight win for the Seagulls.

In the Gameweek 36 of the Premier League 2021/22, Brighton hosted under-pressure Manchester United at Amex Stadium (Falmer). While more than 31,000 football fans were present in the stadium, they experienced an extraordinary game.

The hosts opened the scoreline in 15 minutes after Moisés Caicedo’s grounded shot from outside the box managed to beat the Red Devils goalie David de Gea. In the second half of the game, the visitors surrendered with their poor performances.

Brighton added three goals in the second half; Leandro Trossard was directly involved in all those goals

Though Brighton had some chances to count more goals in the first half, they finally managed to add the scoreline in the four minutes of the second half. Marc Cucurella managed to deliver a superb shot from inside the box to beat De Gea and hit the net. Both Caicedo and Cucurella recorded their respective first goal for this club during that game.

Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez built up the next chance for the hosts with his long shot. As a result, Pascal Groß successfully netted in 57 minutes to make the scoreline 3-0.

Just three minutes later, Leandro Trossard, who also provided assists in the last two goals, added another goal in that game. Though Diogo Dalot managed to block Danny Welbeck’s delivery just ahead of the goal line, Trossard’s body sent that back to the goal.

The English referee Andrew Madley took the help of the VAR to confirm if Trossard used his left hand to score that goal. Later, the referee awarded that goal to the hosts.

In the 72nd minute, the Red Devils’ substitute Edinson Cavani managed to find the net, but he was clearly offside to deny their opening goal of the match.

While Brighton had a total of six shots on target in the game, Manchester United had a total of five shots on target in that match. Except for the opening goal of the match, all the other shots on target of the game came in the second half.

Albion are currently in the ninth position in the ongoing PL season with 47 points in 36 matches. Meanwhile, Man United still haven’t confirmed their spot for the next UEFA Europa League, as the current sixth spot side in this PL season have 58 points in 37 games.

Here are some incredible stats from the game:

  • This 4-0 result was the biggest win for Brighton & Hove Albion in their top-flight history. Previously, in the Premier League history, the Seagulls managed to score four goals in a match only once in February 2018, when they beat Swansea City by 4-1 at home.
  • It was the first time when Brighton managed to score four goals against Manchester United. Before that game, the Seagulls managed to score three goals against the Red Devils only once, during their 3-2 win home Premier League win in August 2018.
  • With this win, Brighton ended their seven-match losing streak (including six in Premier League) against Manchester United. It was their largest losing streak against the Red Devils.
  • Manchester United are now struggling in the sixth position in the Premier League 2021/22 points table with 58 points in 37 games. As they can maximum earn 61 points in this PL season, it will be their lowest points in a complete Premier League season. Their previous lowest points in a PL season were 64 in the 2013/14 season.
