ISL could allow 6 teams to play in play-offs starting next season

The ISL could be set for a new format next season, with six teams expected to make the playoffs. The current format sees the top four make it to the semifinals to determine who wins the cup.

But, the addition of two more teams will allow for more uncertainty and will give other teams the opportunity to compete for the cup. The new format has not been met with any objections by any of the teams.

ISL set to expand knockout stages to six teams

“When the ISL kicked off, there were eight teams, half of which qualified for the playoffs. Since then three new teams have been added, while the playoff format has remained the same. With ISL expected to expand in the future, this new format will provide more opportunities for the participating clubs,” said a source to TOI.

The team that finishes at the top of the table automatically qualifies for the AFC Champions League, and receives Rs 3.5 crore as prize money. The team that finishes second doesn’t need to play in a qualifier, and will remain in contention for the cup in an advantageous position.

As per the new format, the top two teams in the table will automatically qualify for the knockout stages. Teams 3&6 as well as 4&5 in the table will face off for a spot in the semifinal. This will allow six out of the 11 teams in the table to be able to play for the ISL Cup.
