Ralf Rangnick is speculating whether or not to accept an offer to manage Austria

Ralf Rangnick is ready to leave Manchester United after a two-year consulting stint and take over as Austria’s new manager. He is said to be weighing the Austrian FA’s offer, and a formal announcement might come as soon as Friday.

Rangnick as Austria Manager

The 63-year-old German has four games left as United’s interim manager, beginning with Thursday night’s match against Chelsea at Old Trafford, before moving to an unspecified consultancy job at the club in the summer.

Rangnick, on the other hand, has been enticed by the chance to follow Franco Foda as Austria coach and could leave United at the end of the season. On Thursday, the Premier League club refused to comment.

Rangnick met with Austrian FA sporting director Peter Schottel in Manchester earlier this month, but FA president Gerhard Milletich is set to reveal the new coach on Friday in Vienna, and there is mounting suspicion that the former Schalke and RB Leipzig coach will receive the position.

Rangnick’s consulting role has been a mystery since he joined United from Lokomotiv Moscow as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s temporary replacement in December. He was expected to take on a top job and even have a part in the incoming manager’s selection, but he acknowledged that he hasn’t even spoken to Erik ten Hag.

Current Situation

Matter of fact, his contract with United for the next two years only requires him to work as few as six days per month. On that premise, he might be able to accomplish both tasks, albeit that seems improbable. Even so, after only saying on Friday that he intended to continue with United after Ten Hag’s hiring, it would be unexpected if Rangnick went to Austria as a coach.

Rangnick said: “Of course, I would want to be part of the process that has to happen. But right now, I don’t know how this is really being appreciated. This is the question and it’s also important how does Erik ten Hag see that. Does he like to speak with someone like myself? Does he want to work together?”

“How much do Erik ten Hag and the board want my opinion and my experience? That’s what we haven’t spoken about. I am interested and very much feeling this club after those five-and-a-half months. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
