Roger Schmidt in final talks to manage Benfica from 2022-23 season

Roger Schmidt will be taking over Benfica from the next season after he steps down from PSV Eindhoven at the end of the season. Schmidt will sign a two-year contract with the Portuguese club until June 2024.

PSV’s director of football affairs John de Jong told the club website, “We have used the past few weeks to have good conversations. Our intention was to continue with Roger. But Roger has decided to leave at the end of the season. We think that’s a shame, but it doesn’t change our goal to win as many prizes as possible this season.”

Talks between the two parties are in the final stages, and a final agreement is expected to be reached in the coming days. Roger Schmidt is currently focused on the rest of the season with PSV.

The Dutch club is currently second in the Eredivisie, trailing behind Ajax by four points with five games to play. They are currently in an Europa Conference League quarter final tie against Leicester City as well. Moreover, they also have the final of the KNVB Cup this weekend against Ajax.
