Carlos Alcaraz becomes the youngest player to win Miami Open 2022

Carlos Alcaraz has won the Miami Open, and is now the youngest tennis player to win the competition. The record was previously held by Novak Djokovic, who won the Miami Open at the age of 19 in 2007. 

Alcaraz defeated World No.8 Casper Ruud in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 in the final. He is now the first Spaniard to win the Miami Open, and has climbed up to number 11 in the world rankings after his sensational win.

“I have no words to describe how I feel right now,” Carlos Alcaraz said after the one hour, 52-minute match. “It’s so special to win my first Masters 1000 here in Miami. I have an unbelievable team with me… I’m so happy with the win and my team.”

The 18-year-old pulled off a comeback after dropping the first three sets. He won eight out of nine games from 1-4 down, and went on to close out the match with three service holds.

Casper Ruud was competing in his 10th ATP Tour final, and playing for his second hard court trophy. He is the first Norwegian to have competed in a Masters 1000 final. His record is now at 7-3, while that of Alcaraz is at 3-0. 

Carlos Alcaraz has now won three ATP Tour titles, winning the Rio Open in February and Umag last July.
