Intel’s new XeSS AI super resolution technology announced, but launches ‘early summer’

Intel has already made its GPU announcement yesterday and with that, it has also announced its AI upscaling technique in the form of its XeSS. The feature has been teased for quite some time now and Intel has finally showcased it at the Arc GPU launch event for next-gen gaming laptops.

These new Arc A-Series of discrete GPUs for gamers seem very promising on paper as Intel has stuffed it with all the modern features like DirectX 12 Ultimate, Ray Tracing and others. However, as you know the biggest feature everyone is eyeing is the XeSS upscaling technology which Intel says will not be available on Day one.

So, gamers who buy any gaming laptop with the new Intel Arc A-Series of discrete GPUs have to wait till ‘early summer to get the drivers which will be necessary for XeSS to work. This makes sense as Intel has only announced entry-level 64-bit graphics options and we are yet to see high-end gaming GPUs for which we have to wait till summer.

Intel has indeed confirmed that there will be as many as 20 titles at launch that will support XeSS AI upscaling including new games like Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, Legend of the Tomb Raider, Ghostwire Tokyo, Grid Legends, Chorus or Hitman 3 to name a few.

However, the catch with Intel XeSS is that it requires special XMX or DP4a instruction support whereas AMD’s FSR 2.0 doesn’t require such special support and will also be available by the end of Q2 2022. While NVIDIA is on the run to maximize its DLSS library adding more and more games every week, making its already well-established DLSS 2.0 even better with time.
