AMD has officially released its FSR 2.0 ‘FidelityFX Super Resolution’ software

Last year, AMD released FSR 1.0 to much fanfare, and it rapidly became the company’s fastest-selling software product ever, delivering significant speed gains while maintaining high visual fidelity as compared to rendering at native resolution. And now the company has announced what they have accomplished with FSR 2.0 technology.

But, let’s first take a look at FSR 1.0. FSR 1.0 is the company’s industry-leading open source spatial upscaling technology for generating high-resolution frames from low-resolution inputs. It uses a variety of cutting-edge algorithms with a particular emphasis on constructing high-quality edges and is designed for fast performance and easy integration.

FSR 1.0 has already been implemented or is being adopted by over 80 games and engines. The cross-platform codebase makes it possible to play on PCs with numerous GPU vendors, as well as consoles and mobile devices. It’s also now accessible as Radeon Super Resolution3 in the latest Radeon Adrenalin driver, delivering the benefits of FSR 1.0 to games that don’t support it natively.

Coming to the new and exciting FSR 2.0, AMD spent years researching and developing FSR 2.0, which was built from the ground up. It employs cutting-edge temporal techniques, as well as high-quality anti-aliasing, to restore fine geometric and textural detail in the upscaled image.

There is no need for machine learning hardware, and there is a lot of support. FSR 2.0’s upscaling method, like FSR 1.0’s, does not use Machine Learning (ML). While machine learning is one way to handle a variety of challenges, it is not required for high-quality upscaling. As a result, FSR 2.0 does not require dedicated ML gear, allowing more gamers to take advantage of it. FSR 2.0 will work with a wide range of products and platforms, including some competition graphics cards, just like FSR 1.0.

DISCLAIMERS AND FOOTNOTES

  1. AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution is available on select games and requires developer integration. See https://www.amd.com/en/technologies/radeon-software-fidelityfx-super-resolution for a list of supported games.
