Barcelona’s new financial limits have been revealed, and the spending cap for them is set at -€144 million. As a result, they will not be allowed to make any acquisitions in the summer unless they can make savings.

In 2021, the team’s salary cap was set at €97 million, which they struggled to operate under. And now, it has been revealed that without cutting costs, or selling players, there is no way that Barcelona will be able to make new signings.

Barcelona’s new spending limits revealed by La Liga

“The reduction of 242m means that it was estimated Barcelona would suffer smaller losses than has been the case,” LaLiga’s general corporate director Javier Gomez explained.

“The negative limit doesn’t mean anything with regards to this season’s signings. It means there will be more of a limit in the coming seasons, unless there are capital gains or profits.”

The Blaugrana were able to sign new players despite being in a financial crisis this past winter. Philippe Coutinho and Yusuf Demir left the club while Sergio Aguero retired, and Barcelona agreed a new contract with Samuel Umtiti. As a result of those savings, Ferran Torres, Adama Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined the club in the January transfer window.

The limits placed on Barcelona now imply that they will have to follow a 1:4 transfer policy. That is, they can only spend a fourth of their savings or income, or up to 50 percent in some special cases.
