New Apple M1 Ultra defeats a 64 core Ryzen Threadripper 3990X

Apple’s M1 Ultra custom chipset is the company’s fastest, and it can support up to a 20-core CPU by combining two M1 Max chipsets. According to the newest benchmark leak, you get an extraordinarily fast SoC that nearly matches the speed of a desktop 64-core CPU while consuming substantially less power.

The top-tier version of the M1 Ultra was tested using Geekbench 5, and it received a score of 1793 in the single-core category. The result puts it ahead of the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X, which has 64 cores and 128 threads and scored 1213. It is, nevertheless, the fastest processor in the multi-score sector, with 25133 points compared to 24055 for the M1 Ultra.

Because the M1 Ultra has fewer than half the amount of processing cores, and not all of them are high-performance variations, it is still a remarkable achievement. The 20 cores in the M1 Ultra are split into 16 high-performance cores, four of which are laser-focused on power efficiency. This portion is combined with 128GB of unified RAM in the benchmark, which is the chip’s maximum supported memory and boosts overall memory bandwidth to 800GB/s.

At the same time, the M1 Ultra is exceptionally powered efficient, thanks to its mass production on the 5nm node as well as its development on a completely distinct architecture. The SoC’s lower power consumption allows it to fit into compact form factor enclosures like the Mac Studio, but there will still be a steep price to pay for such powerful technology.

The UltraFusion method, which combines two M1 Max chipsets and generates 2.5TB of bandwidth between them, is how Apple was able to pack such astounding levels of speed. Furthermore, Apple boasts that its latest and best SoC can give 90 per cent greater multi-threaded performance while consuming the same amount of power as the fastest available 16-core PC desktop CPU.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of Geekbench 5, it can favour some processors over others, thus it may not be a fair reflection of performance for the M1 Ultra or the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X 64-core processor.
