MediaTek is taking over the flagship chip market

MediaTek on the 1st of March launched the latest Dimensity 8000 Series chip, after the release, the Deputy GM of the brand said that the flagship processor market is no longer a monopoly.

That statement is true as Samsung, one of the top chip makers has lost a considerable amount of its market share in the mobile processor market due to MediaTek’s domination. As per a Counterpoint Research report, the South Korean tech giant’s processors fell to the fifth, with a market share of just 4% which is unusual.

Finally, Samsung launches new Exynos 2200 with AMD RDNA2 GPU

Samsung is currently in the middle of reshuffling its smartphone portfolio strategy to include sourcing from both in-house and third-party Chinese ODMs. Meanwhile, Qualcomm and MediaTek have taken over the application processor market. MediaTek has been seeing much success in Samsung’s own smartphone lineup in the mid-range segments for 4G & 5G devices.

Currently, Samsung leads the market globally with a 34% market share. Exynos had a 4% global share. MediaTek has become the topmost chipmaker in the US beating even Qualcomm. Apple on the other hand witnessed a decline of 1% in 2021 due to chip shortages.

Unisoc secured a respectable 11% of the global chip market share. Huawei landed at the bottom of the pack with its HiSilicon market securing a 1% market share. As of now, the Exynos decline in the segment can be due to the increasing popularity of MediaTek.

The latest chip from the brand, the Dimensity 9000 was announced late last year and has outperformed Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen1 chip in many benchmark tests. High-end flagship processors are no longer one and the same, take the Dimensity 8000 Series, for instance, it caters to the high-end market while the Dimensity 9000 is MediaTek’s first foray into the flagship market.

The Dimensity 8100 features the design of the 9000, but not its performance. It does provide an enjoyable flagship experience across games, imaging, display, and communication.

MediaTek Dimensity 8100

The Dimensity 8100 is an octa-core unit, four of which are Cortex A-78 cores clocked at 2.85GHz. The Dimensity 8000, the same cores max out at 2.75GHz. Both the chips use the Mali-G610 MC6 GPU assisted by MediaTek’s HyperEngine 5.0 gaming technologies for graphics.

MediaTek’s biggest goal is to stand firm as a flagship chip maker and the brand is looking to work harder to launch better products constantly.
