Tencent, a Chinese computer titan, revealed today that it had acquired a majority share in Polish game developer 1C Entertainment. At this moment, the contract’s financial terms (which was reached in November 2021) have not been revealed. According to the press statement, the company will be rebranded (including a rename) within six months.

1C Entertainment management board member Tomasz Nieszporski stated: We are genuinely excited by this deal. It is a fantastic opportunity for 1C Entertainment to achieve our wildest dreams and aspirations in the video games business. A leading global games company will now back our vision and passion, and I am humbled by the unique chance of working together with Tencent and the other top creative minds that are part of its global ecosystem.

Tencent Games Global Chief Technology Officer Li Shen added: We couldn’t be more pleased to work with the talented team at 1C Entertainment, supporting them as they embark on a new phase of growth.

1C Entertainment may not be one of the most well-known gaming firms, but it is old enough to have produced notable franchises, including King’s Bounty, Men of War, and IL-2 Sturmovik. QLOC, a co-development, testing, and localisation business known for its work on hits like Devil May Cry, Dark Souls Remastered, Mortal Kombat, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, is also owned by 1C Entertainment.

Tencent’s investment in 1C Entertainment is the latest in a long line of acquisitions. Funcom, Leyou, Riot Games, Sharkmob, Sumo, Turtle Rock Studios, Wake Up Interactive, Inflexion Games, Grinding Gear Games, Fatshark, Klei Entertainment, 10 Chambers Collective, Stunlock Studios, and Yager Interactive are among the companies owned by the Chinese behemoth. Epic Games, Garena, Dontnod, Bloober, Marvelous, Netmarble, Kakao, Bluehole, Frontier, Kadokawa Corporation, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, Paradox Interactive, Remedy, Playtonic, and PlatinumGames all have minority stakes or investments in Tencent.
