Sergio Aguero says his Manchester City statue would be revealed in May

Sergio Aguero, Manchester City‘s all-time leading scorer, has confirmed that the club’s statue in his honor will be unveiled in May, a decade after his historic last-minute victory.

When the Premier League giants announced his retirement in March, they said they will create a statue at the Etihad Stadium as a memorial to their greatest-ever scorer. Aguero has now stated that the project will be completed in three months.

Statue Reveal in May

On the final day of his debut season in England, 10 years ago, the Argentine scored a thrilling last-minute winner against QPR to give City their first league title since 1968.

After his spectacular strike in City’s 3-2 win over QPR on May 13, 2012, the former striker had to call time on his career after being diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia in December following his summer trade to Barcelona.

Last year, after the club commissioned a statue to commemorate his achievements, City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told Aguero over the phone of his aspirations to be immortalized at the Etihad Stadium.

About Aguero’s Figure

Last summer, Aguero’s sculpture was presented alongside those of fellow club legends Vincent Kompany and David Silva. The three is seen as a sign of the progress made in the last decade under managers Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Pep Guardiola.

The current statues, which are lit up at night with blue-tinted lights, were designed by award-winning sculptor Andy Scott and are made up of thousands of welded galvanized steel parts.

“Sergio’s contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated,” said Al Mubarak at the time. “His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the club and maybe even in those who simply love football.”

In 10 years with City, Aguero scored 260 goals in 390 games, winning five Premier League titles in the process.
