Inter Milan 0-2 Liverpool: Champions League Round of 16 1st leg

Liverpool have one foot in the quarter finals of the Champions League, earning a 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash. Despite getting the win at San Siro, the away goals advantage is no longer applicable from this season.

So, they will have to prevent the scores from being leveled at Anfield to avoid extra time. Goals from Bobby Firmino and Mohamed Salah secured a comfortable win for the Premier League club.

Salah and Firmino seal advantage for Liverpool

Firmino came on for Diogo Jota, who was subbed off at half time. The Brazilian opened the scoring for Liverpool, with a glancing header from Andy Robertson’s corner.

And shortly after, Mohamed Salah would double their lead. Salah became the first player to score against AC Milan and Inter Milan in the same Champions League season after Peter Crouch for Tottenham in 2010/11. The Egyptian’s eighth away game goal came from a deflected strike with ten minutes left on the clock.

Inter Milan failed to get a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes, despite Liverpool not being at their best in the first half. The second half saw Jurgen Klopp’s men revitalised, and they did enough to get the result they needed.

The next game at Anfield will be a very daunting task for the Nerazzurri, with few teams being able to beat Liverpool at their home turf. But it has been done before, and the Merseyside club will have to be at their best to keep out their opponents in the return leg.
