AMD reportedly making its ‘RDNA 2 Refresh’ Radeon RX 6950XT GPUs with a taste of Over 2.5 GHz Boost Clock

Greymon55 has shared another day and another rumour about the AMD Radeon RX 6950XT ‘RDNA 2 Refresh’ graphics card. AMD offered some great clock speed increases with its existing 7nm Navi 21 XTXH GPU, allowing not only higher & stable clock rates but also pushing overclocked specs over 3 GHz.

We’ve seen how the latter has enabled overclockers to push the Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card with the Navi 21 XTXH GPU to the top of various benchmarks. However, the Navi 21 XTXH appears to be on the verge of being replaced by the RDNA 2 updated GPU variation of the same chip.

While AMD is unlikely to use the 6nm production node, which would have helped push GPU clock speeds even higher, the AMD Radeon RX 6950XT graphics card, the RDNA 2 refresh’s flagship, is now expected to have a reference boost frequency above 2.5 GHz.

To put things in perspective, the current Navi 21 XT & XTXH chips have a reference boost frequency of 2250 MHz, and only a few custom models, such as the Gigabyte AORUS RX 6900 XT Xtreme WaterForce WB and the ASUS ASUS ROG STRIX LC RX 6900 XT Gaming Top, can attain boost frequencies above 2.5 GHz. Higher clock speeds would result in over 26 TFLOPs of FP32 horsepower, an increase of 3 TFLOPs over the current model.

If the AMD Radeon RX 6950XT can attain standard boost clocks of over 2.5 GHz with a few tweaks on the RDNA 2 Refresh Navi 21 XTXH GPU, we can expect custom variants for the same chip to deliver even higher boost clocks.

We should expect 2.8 or 2.9 GHz from the new model if we use the same figures as the current custom variations, which are clocked around +250 to +300 MHz over the reference specs. When combined with the 18 Gbps memory dies that are also anticipated for the forthcoming range, this would result in a significant performance boost. However, it will come at a larger cost in terms of energy use.

AMD is still using the 7nm node, and this isn’t going to change, but you’re getting faster clock speeds and faster memory speeds, which necessitates more power. The Radeon RX 6900 XT reference model has a TDP of 300W, so we can expect the RX 6950XT graphics card to have a TDP of 350W or perhaps more. Of course, nothing has been verified yet, but this will likely happen.
