New AMD Ryzen 7 6800H on the upcoming Acer Nitro 5 hits the internet for the first time

AMD has already launched its new Rembrandt APUs or the Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors for mobile based on the latest 6nm process from TSMC at CES 2022.

We are all waiting for these new APUs to power the upcoming gaming laptops and other thin & light options, meanwhile, Professional Review was lucky enough to get the new Acer Nitro 5 featuring Ryzen 7 6800H processor and GeForce RTX 3060 GPU.

There is more architectural improvement seen in the Ryzen 7 6800H as it now features Zen 3+ cores which does bring slight improvement, not a huge one. As the APU only supports DDR5 RAM, here you have dual 8GB DDR5-4800 RAM kits and an RTX 3060 with 140W TGP, which is again responsible in powering the 15.6-inch QHD display with a 165Hz refresh rate.

In the extensive benchmarks of the AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, in both Cinebench R20/R23 we see this new 8 core chipbeating the likes of older Ryzen 7 5800H by around 9% in all tests and around 5% faster than Ryzen 9 5900HX. Now, this data doesn’t totally judge the performance you can expect from this chip still gives an idea.

The performance of this Ryzen 7 6800H will totally depend from laptop to laptop and the thermals inside it. While AMD did stress on the improvement we will see with the Ryzen 6000 series in terms of battery life, however, as per Professional Review, this Acer Nitro 5 lasted for only 2.5 hours with 40% brightness and doing light tasks.

However, we in our testing of the previous-gen Acer Nitro 5 too found the battery life to be poor, now, it totally depends on the optimizations of the laptop maker and AMD with its drivers. Still, we expect further improvement from other OEMs and cannot draw any conclusions from this single review.

This time, with the increased prices of DDR5 RAM and chip shortage, these new-gen laptops will not be cheaper as Professional Review suspects this Acer Nitro 5 is to be available starting from 1599 EUR. This is almost a 400 EUR price hike, so be it Acer or any other OEM, expect price hike in newer AMD powered laptops due to newer and rare DDR5 RAM.
