Top 10 January transfer window signings in 2022

The January transfer window has now slammed shut, with squads potentially finalised for the final six months of the season. In 2022, the midseason window was filled with a number of great deals, an improvement in terms of numbers in recent years.

So, here are the top ten transfers that took place this year.

Top 10 January transfer window signings

10. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Arsenal to Barcelona (free)

It is no secret that Barcelona need a recognised goalscorer right now, and to be able to sign a player who has proven himself in the Bundesliga and Premier League for free is a big achievement. Signing Aubameyang from Arsenal could be a big boost for Xavi’s team if the Gabon international is able to find his shooting boots.

9. Kieran Trippier: Atletico Madrid to Newcastle United (€14m)

The first big signing under Newcastle United’s new owners – Kieran Trippier has finally returned to England. The player was in great form under Diego Simeone in recent years, helping them win La Liga, and could be a huge boost for Eddie Howe as he tries to help his team survive the drop.

8. Christian Eriksen to Brentford (free)

The Bees have signed their biggest ever player in Christian Eriksen, recruiting him on a free transfer. He hasn’t stepped on the pitch in a competitive game since the summer, but is now close to a return to club football in the Premier League.

7. Lucas Digne: Everton to Aston Villa (€27m)

After falling out with Rafa Benitez, Lucas Digne sealed a transfer to Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa. He is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, and could shine in the new project that he is a part of. A price tag worth €27m for the player is very reasonable considering his age and quality.

6. Bruno Guimaraes: Lyon to Newcastle United (€48m)

The Brazilian is among the more expensive signings made this winter, and is a very valuable addition to the Toon squad. His ability to hold down the midfield will be key for Newcastle to try and survive in the Premier League this season.

5. Luis Diaz: Porto to Liverpool (€65m)

With €25m agreed in add-ons, Liverpool have made yet another remarkable deal in January with the Porto striker joining them. He could be a huge addition to the squad if he is able to adjust to life in the Premier League and under Jurgen Klopp.

4. Robin Gosens: Atalanta to Inter (loan with obligation to buy)

The Nerazzurri have snapped up one of their best players of their direct rivals, signing German left-back Robin Gosens on a loan with an obligation to buy. The player is currently nursing an injury but will be a huge addition to the Inter Milan backline when he returns.

3. Denis Zakaria: Borussia Monchengladbach to Juventus (€5m)

Instead of waiting to sign Zakaria when he became a free agent (the classic Juventus strategy), the Serie A club went in and signed him on a bargain deal. The Swiss midfielder joins them immediately and will be replacing Rodrigo Bentancur and Aaron Ramsey in midfield.

2. Ferran Torres: Man City to Barcelona (€55m)

The former Valencia man has returned to La Liga and joined Barcelona. Xavi personally asked for the club to sign the player, and he now has the man he asked for, alongside a bright young squad to lead into the future.

1. Dusan Vlahovic: Fiorentina to Juventus (€75m)

The Serbian sensation has been signed by the Serie A giants, and he joins them for a huge fee. Vlahovic leads the race for the Capocannoniere right now, and could make a big difference in their season if he is able to hit the ground running and continue his goalscoring form.

Honourable mentions:-

  • Anthony Martial – Man Utd to Sevilla (loan)
  • Philippe Coutinho – Barcelona to Aston Villa (loan)
  • Dejan Kulusevski – Juventus to Spurs (loan with buy option)
  • Rodrigo Bentancur – Juventus to Spurs (€25m)
  • Lorenzo Insigne – Napoli to Toronto FC (free)
