Here’s some info on AMD’s most disliked Radeon GPU ever launched – Radeon RX 6500 XT

The hugely disliked AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT was recently announced, stunning buyers with weak performance at a low price. AMD has one of the worst releases for one of its graphics cards, with discoveries such as the inability to encode graphics properly and restricting the number of PCIe lanes.

The Radeon RX 6500 XT was announced by AMD at a cheap price ($199), with limited availability outside of North American markets. The doomed card, however, sold out swiftly for prices exceeding $299 US because of gamers’ and enthusiasts’ low cost and need for graphics cards.

The AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT has some flaws, including missing features and subpar PCIe Gen 3 performance. PCIe Gen 4 is the most recent version of Intel’s PCIe Express technology, which was introduced last year. Users of the PCIe 3.0 technology, on the other hand, may expect a major performance drop on their machines while utilizing the newest AMD card.

The AMD Ryzen 6000 ‘Rembrandt’ series APUs enable PCIe 4.0 and encoding, as well as AV1 encoding. AMD has also begun to use Navi 24 GPUs in its workstation graphics chips, such as the PRO W6400, W6500M, and W6300M. Because the graphic cards are intended to be used in laptops alongside the company’s Rembrandt Ryzen 6000 APUs, the three GPUs will lack H264, H265, and AV1 encoding capabilities.

John Bridgman, Linux NPI SW Architect at AMD, establishes in the forums on Phoronix’s website.

The primary use of Navi24 will be in laptops paired with a Rembrandt APU, which has full video functionality and Gen4 PCI-E.

My impression was that it was just encoded that was limited in Navi24, not decode – still not sure if that limitation is real or just a typo on the product page. Trying to find out a definitive answer.

That marketing blog would have made the Radeon RX 6500 XT 4 GB graphics card appear pretty poor as a 2022 launch, so it’s no surprise. The following are some significant considerations for the Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card:

  • Only 4 GB VRAM in 2022
  • Limited To Just 4 PCIe Lanes (Gen 3 platforms to see severe performance degradation)
  • No AV1 Decoding
  • No H264/H265 Encoding
  • $199 US MSRP But AIBs suggest over $339/299 Euros pricing
  • Questionable Availability

Where available, AMD’s Radeon RX 6500 XT is currently on sale. The Radeon PRO W6400W will be available in the next months. When AMD releases their Rembrandt-powered computers next month, we should start seeing AMD Navi 24 graphics cards in laptops.
