Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor review: The best for the price

These days monitors are flooding the Indian market and we have a lot of options at our disposal to choose from, however, we see that the major shift in gaming has to be to QHD. Yes, as GPUs grow to become even more powerful each day we are neglecting FHD even more as for gaming QHD is slowly and steadily becoming the sweet spot for gaming.

While I was more inclined to 4K gaming because of the powerful hardware I used to get from our partners, now, with the trend of more affordable GPU options finally, I decided to buy a new QHD Gaming monitor for my own use. While hunting for one great gaming monitor, I found the market has a lot of options but choosing the right one is a bit tricky and deceiving as well if you are not very good at it.

So, after a lot of research and insights, I found two good and affordable QHD gaming monitors to choose from, one being this Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor and the other being the Samsung Odyssey G5 Gaming Monitor. Both of them are priced very similarly, and if you see their prices at the sale on Amazon India, you will find both of them to be priced at around ₹23,499.

Well, our friends at Lenovo gave some discounts on their online store and personally I preferred the Lenovo G27q-20 mostly because of its more colour-accurate panel and a higher 165Hz refresh rate. I am using this as my primary Gaming monitor for over a month now and I can simply say this is the best QHD gaming monitor for the price!

Design & Build

One of the best things about the Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor is that it bears one of the strongest stands on a monitor I’ve ever seen and the procedure of hooking the display to it is very easy. Once done, the huge stand holds the display effortlessly and it looks nice and has that gaming vibe to it.

The L-shaped stand looks good and has that gaming essence while the bezels are very minimal at the three corners while the bottom one is relatively bigger with Lenovo branding on it. Overall, design-wise the Lenovo G27q-20 has that premium feel and gamer vibe and actually it’s very functional.

From side angles too, the monitor looks sleek and the height is adjustable thanks to the strong stand, you swivel it up and down while also adjusting the height and that’s it, you cannot do anything more, however, this is more than enough for most gamers.

Display Quality

The key aspect of buying this Gaming monitor has to be its display and as advertised, it comes with one of the best QHD panels at this price bracket. This is a QHD IPS panel with up to 165Hz refresh rate, comes with ultra-low 1ms MPRT2 response time and also supports AMD FreeSync™ Premium and NVIDIA G-SYNC.

Another two key aspects of this Gaming monitor is its colour accuracy which is advertised as covering 99% sRGB colour space and 10-bit colour to render the world on-screen in over 1 billion colours while the second key point is its peak brightness going up to a whopping 400 nits. Also, thanks to HDR decoding, it recreates the original image in real-time for smooth and rapid fast gameplay.

This is by far one of the best displays I’ve noticed and though it’s a Non-OLED panel, the specs, display quality it and price will make you forget about having an OLED panel. To prove the great quality of the Lenovo G27q-20’s display, we did run some tests with our DataColor SpyderX Pro and here are the results:

As you see in our tests, the monitor is one of the most colour accurate gaming monitors you can get for the price, covering 100% sRGB colour gamut as advertised and covering 86% AdobeRGB, 94% DCI-P3 and 83% of NTSC colour gamut. For a gaming monitor at such an affordable price tag, the results are really impressive.

You also see in other aspects such as tone response, grey ramp, the Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor performs as expected though the measured brightness and contrast seem to be lower than expected. Well, the quality of the Gaming monitor is really good and one of the most colour-accurate in the price range with narrow bezels looks good for everyday work and gaming.

Productivity

Suppose you are someone who does a lot of photos or video editing and needs a monitor which is capable of providing you with both a good Gaming experience as well as good productivity experience, the Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor with its incredible colour accuracy can be a serious option.

Especially as we are stuck in a work-from-home state, having that one perfect monitor both for work and play is crucial. Well, the Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor solves that problem to some extent and being a QHD monitor, you can do work stuff pretty easily.

As 1440p is the next big thing, you can choose to make videos at QHD as well, however, for video production, 4K always is a standard option though. Still, for max up to QHD content and other Blender, Photoshop works, this monitor makes a lot of sense and is an ideal tool for productivity work as well except gaming.

Gaming

Now, coming to the main aspect of this monitor i.e. Gaming, yes, here also you will be happy to know that the Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor lives up to expectations and delivers what you expect from it. The 165Hz refresh rate and 1ms ultra-low response time work flawlessly paired with AMD FreeSync Premium, however, you need a Radeon GPU for that.

I played a lot of new games with AMD and NVIDIA GPUs while the experience remains fluid, kudos to Lenovo for making the Gaming monitor as expected for gaming. Also, because of the high brightness and colour accuracy, the colours inside the games look punchier and the scenes look beautiful overall.

The Lenovo Smart Artery Software is also a useful feature that gets better with time as it is a self-learning software and the switches at the back let you access a lot of gaming-centric features of the Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor. It works seamlessly as you can change modes, brightness, contrast and a lot more, using the monitor controls without leaving the game.

Now, very few gaming monitors have G-SYNC compatibility in this price range, however, the Lenovo G27q-20 is both NVIDIA G-SYNC compatible and also supports AMD Radeon FreeSync Premium. Both technologies work perfectly with each of the GPUs to provide you with a tear-free, smooth gaming experience and I noticed no lags unless it’s a network issue.

Even playing online multiplayer to the latest triple-A titles like God of War, this QHD Gaming monitor is bliss if you pair up with a GPU like RTX 3070 or 3070 Ti. Also, thanks to the TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light and TÜV Rheinland Flicker-Free certified technology, there’s reduced harmful blue light and annoying screen flicker, giving a comfortable, healthier viewing experience.

So, even for that, the 10-bit colour reproduction ensures that every Netflix stream gives you a rich entertainment experience with punchier colours.

I do use the Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor as a primary monitor for my YouTube watch time every day and the display works flawlessly producing high quality video output every time. Overall, even for serious media consumption too, the Lenovo Gaming monitor is exceptional and performs well above expectation.

Verdict

As QHD is the next step into gaming, a lot of mid-range to high-end gamers will soon upgrade or are planning to upgrade to QHD Gaming monitors, this Lenovo G27q-20 QHD Gaming Monitor can be considered as a serious option because of its incredible price-to-performance ratio.

Lenovo has focussed on what’s most necessary specs for a gamer and given all of them into this Gaming monitor. Nothing is perfect, neither is this one which isn’t delivering the promised 400nits of peak brightness, still, for the price you cannot ask for more.

With such high refresh rates and colour accuracy on a monitor that prices in the Rs.20k price range, this is a highly recommendable option for QHD gamers.
