Lenovo Smart Clock 2 review: Your new bedtime friend

Lenovo has recently launched its new Lenovo Smart Clock 2 with a wireless charging dock in India for a price of Rs.6,999 and yes we got this tiny friend even before it was launched. Having been using it for over a week now and I can say this is one of the best implementations of Google Assistant and far better than the originally launched Lenovo Smart Clock that retails for Rs.3,999 currently.

The best part of this Lenovo Smart Clock 2 is you also get a MagSafe compatible wireless charging dock included and that justifies the price of this tiny little friend which you will fall in love with. In India, Lenovo has only launched the Heather Grey color option and I got the same variant to use and here we will make a complete review of this product while also showing you why should you buy it:

Design & Build

When you first look at the Lenovo Smart Clock 2, you will see that it borrows the same small cute design you saw with the original Lenovo Smart Clock. However, now you have the wireless charging stand on which this Smart Clock 2 easily attaches as it has a Pogo pin that effortlessly complements each other.

The clock, on the other hand, has this Soft-touch fabric finish which gives a premium feel to this smart clock. The dimensions of the clock are very minimal and can easily fit on your bedside table while with the charging stand it could take some space, however, worth it because it also charges your smartphone wirelessly.

That Heather Grey color along with a fabric finish enhances the beauty of this Smart Clock 2 and overall, in terms of design, I feel this is very convenient, especially as a bedside partner. The simplistic look of this device lets you place it anywhere in your home and it would perfectly blend in.

Display

The Lenovo Smart Clock 2 features a 4.0-inch LCD IPS Touchscreen display, we do not exactly know the peak brightness of the display, however, it showcases the time, weather, your family photos on a choice of customizable clock face displays.

Lenovo Smart Clock 2 review: Your new bedtime friend

It goes decently bright and as you will mostly use indoors, the display is adequately bright enough even if you place the smart clock under bright light. The touch sensitivity of the display works like a charm and you can do the basic stuff right from the display itself.

Also, the display can go really dim at night automatically because it has an auto-brightness sensor, my suggestion would be to keep it on, as the Lenovo Smart Clock 2 can adapt to the environmental brightness. Place it anywhere in your house, the display will adapt and you can clearly see what you want to, no complaints on this side.

Google Assistant

The key aspect of this Smart Clock 2 is obviously the Google Assistant that does all you ask for without any complaints. From asking the weather to asking to play soothing nighttime stories or from asking the latest news to knowing who’s at the door, the Google Assistant does it all.

You can control up to 50,000 compatible devices with your voice or touch and that’s amazing if you have a smart home ecosystem with Google Assistant as your primary voice assistant. Thanks to the Google Home app, controlling, setting up your new device onto the Google Home ecosystem is very easy.

Suppose, even if you are not at home, if your devices are connected to Wi-Fi, you can use Google Home to control from anywhere this is why smart home devices are getting increasingly popular over time. If you are familiar with Google Assistant, you will indeed find this device very useful and easy to use.

Now coming to this Lenovo Smart Clock 2, this is obviously more than a typical Google Assistant-powered Smart speaker. It is a smart clock as the name suggests, with the tiny display, it acts as a perfect smart clock that can show both time and weather, while the usage of this display remains a strong point and eases the use of Google Assistant.

Sadly, this is the last Lenovo Smart Clock to feature Google Assistant as the default voice assistant as this year launched Smart Clock 3 will switch to Alexa.

Performance & Usability

Even though this is just a Smart display with an in-built speaker and Google Assistant, to make it faster, Lenovo has used a built-in MediaTek™ MT8167S Processor to power the Smart Clock 2. This does make a difference as the device runs very smooth without any hiccups, complemented by 1 GB RAM + 8 GB Flash memory.

The OS is very simple and intuitive, showing you things that are needed the most like changing wallpapers, listening to music, adjusting settings of the device, and all those little things you do from the OS itself. Overall, the performance is decent, while sometimes in terms of connectivity, I noticed some glitches, but mostly it works fine.

The nightmode is a great feature, in my opinion, because at night if you turn on this mode by just asking Google Assistant, the 11 lumens nightlight at the bottom of the Smart Clock 2 lights up effortlessly. If you are someone like me who likes to turn on some kind of low dim light at night then you might find this feature very useful.

Regardless, if someone has experience of using a smart device like this Lenovo Smart Clock 2, one can easily learn as Lenovo and Google have made using this device pretty easy and effortless.

Audio & Microphone

Coming to the quality of audio, the Lenovo Smart Clock 2 has this small form factor which at first glance you might think to not to be loud as such. However, to my surprise, the 3W front-firing speakers are adequately loud for listening to music or just for interacting with Google Assistant.

The quality of the speakers is also very good and I have to give credit to Lenovo for this to use such good quality speakers inside such a small form factor like this. I thoroughly enjoyed music listening with the Smart Clock 2, with some stutters sometimes, and you could clearly experience the bass as well, overall, you will be very satisfied with the quality of audio used here.

In terms of privacy, you can toggle the mute button and as the clock doesn’t have a camera, your privacy is assured, however, if it had one that would have been a bonus as you have on the Echo Show series. The Far-field microphone array used here, on a small device like this, is one of the most accurate microphones I ever used on a smart speaker/display.

Even if you are at the end of the room and the Lenovo Smart Clock 2 is at the other end, even with the slightest voice of “Ok Google,” it recognizes easily. So, kudos to Lenovo in this department as well. Also, you can use this smart clock as an intercom and broadcast your voice to other speakers and smart devices in your home.

Wireless Charging Dock

Now, the standout feature of this Lenovo Smart Clock 2 is the addition of a new wireless charging dock and both of them work seamlessly together. If you have a flagship smartphone with wireless charging support, then this will be a very nice option for you.

Also, it is MagSafe compatible, so you can charge iPhone 12 series and above iPhones easily. Talking about the charging speed, I used this wireless charging dock to charge my iPhone 12 Mini on a regular basis, this dock used to charge my phone fully in just over the 1-hour mark.

So, if you keep your phone on the charging dock and go do your other household work, or keep it for charging at night and sleep, your smartphone automatically gets charged. This is one of the key features added this time which has also incidentally increased the pricing.

Verdict

If you are looking for a unique smart display with the option for charging your iPhone or your Android flagship, this Lenovo Smart Clock 2 is easily recommendable. Even though it has high pricing but thanks to its way functionality and uniqueness, it is worth spending the money on.

Overall, the Lenovo Smart Clock 2, is a suitable partner for your daily work or play and is an extremely useful device for a good smart home experience in 2022.
