OFFICIAL: I-League suspended due to increasing COVID-19 cases

The I-League has been temporarily suspended for a week due to the increasing COVID-19 cases. The 2021-22 season of I-League started on 26th December and after just 1 matchday the league has been suspended.

According to reports, one of the team hotels that hosted Sreenidi Deccan, Real Kashmir and Rajasthan used their bubble staffs for the Christmas celebration. It was the first breach of the bubble, which was then followed by this breach where at least fifteen players and officials of the seven teams returned positive for the COVID-19.

The I-League officials met today via a video conference meeting and decided to suspend the league for at least 1 week. They will meet again on 4th January and decide whether to resume the I-League from 6th January.

OFFICIAL: I-League suspended due to increasing COVID-19 cases

The AIFF said in an official statement: “….There needs to be bare minimum contact among all for the next 5-7 days as studies indicate that both the Delta and Omicron variant can be passed onto other human bodies within the period.”

“….The Committee hence, unanimously decided to postpone the Hero I-League 2021-22 matches for the next round which were scheduled on December 30-31, 2021.”

“All players, staff, and referees have already been tested today, and will be tested again on January 1 and January 3, 2022 respectively. The League will review the situation once all test results come in on January 4, 2022, and reach a consensus thereafter including the next round matches on Jan 4-5.”
