2021 was marked by a series of misfortunes for Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos was ecstatic on January 1, 2021. His Real Madrid contract appeared to be about to be extended, and he appeared to be a lock to represent Spain in the European Championship. He was also his country’s all-time appearance maker and Los Blancos’ most decorated player.

However, as of December 31 approaches, Ramos will no longer be a Real Madrid player, and he will not compete in Euro 2020. He’s finally ready to say goodbye to a year he’d rather forget.

January: The Injury Occurred

The year began disastrously for him due to gastrointestinal issues, and he did not appear on January 2nd. During Real Madrid’s 2-1 loss in the Supercopa de Espana in mid-month, the Spaniard injured his left knee.

February: On the Medical Table

Ramos’ knee condition was a source of concern, and surgery was considered. On February 6, it was revealed that he had chosen to have surgery, which would keep him out for six to eight weeks.

March: The National Team’s Final Goodbye

When the Qatar World Cup qualification process began, Ramos hoped to be a member of Luis Enrique’s team. He made his comeback against Elche on March 13, and three days later he faced Atalanta.

He started against Greece but was replaced at halftime, then sat on the bench against Georgia and Kosovo due to a “technical decision.” After the game, he was injured again and has not played for Spain since.

April: an Empty Month

His issues would not go away, and Eder Militao formed a bond with Nacho in the Real Madrid XI. For the first time since May 2013, he did not play a single minute in the month.

May: a Fatal KO

Time was running out, and Ramos made his debut against Chelsea in London, but it was clear that he wasn’t ready. It was his 671st match for the club, but on May 13 MARCA reported that Luis Enrique was sceptical of him, and Spain’s squad was announced without him on May 24.

June: Farewell to Real Madrid

Ramos’s time at Real Madrid came to an end on June 17, 2021. He stated that he “never wanted to leave,” but that was, unfortunately, the case. His next move was unknown.

July: Hello Paris

Paris Saint-Germain announced his signing on July 8, with many more big names to follow.

August: No Games this Time

PSG’s season began, but another month passed without Ramos appearing. His return date was not specified.

September: More Intrigue

There was no news of Ramos’ return, but there were some whispers of improvement and speculation about a return after the October internationals.

October: More of the Same

The internationals left, but Ramos did not. There were constant announcements that he was close to returning.

November: 207 days later

Ramos returned to training on November 9 but did not play again until November 28 against Saint-Etienne. He was quickly added to PSG’s list of injured players.

December: Sent off to end a Bad Year

To cap off the year, PSG was drawn against Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, and Ramos returned after a three-week absence.

On December 22, he came off the bench at halftime, was booked in the 81st minute, and then received his second yellow card four minutes later, bringing his year to a close with a red card. Few people will be as ecstatic as Ramos that 2022 is almost here.
