The global foldable phone market seems to have reached new heights in Q3 2021, at the same time when Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Foldable smartphone shipments touch the million mark in Q3 2021, and Samsung enjoys a market share of a huge 93%.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 led foldable phones sales to the boom in Q3. Both models have unprecedented growth, though the market had a stronger space for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 reveals a new DSCC report.
Q3 foldable smartphone shipments from all companies combined (but mainly Samsung) were 215% higher on a quarterly basis and 480% higher on yearly basis. Throughout the 3 month duration, the foldable phone market recorded roughly 2.6 million shipments. DSCC estimates that foldable phone shipments in Q4 will come closer to 4 million. And by the end of the year, Samsung may also increase its market share even further to 95% Which is too huge as compared to other companies.
Meanwhile, as per the report the Galaxy Z Flip 3 made up 60% of the foldable smartphone shipments in Q3. This may be because it is the cheapest of the two Samsung foldable launched this year. Likely, Samsung took 93% of the foldable shipments. Huawei had to settle for only 6%, only because of Mate X2.
However, foldable smartphone shipments could go high up to 3.8 million in Q4 2021. This is because it would be the first full quarter for Samsung’s new foldable phones. The DSCC report also mentions that foldable shipments could surpass 17 million in 2022. Additionally, analysts also made a prediction that foldable such as the Galaxy Z Flip series may not have a bright future. They are understandably leaning towards larger foldable such as the Z Fold lineup.
It’s also worth mentioning that more companies could step into the foldable smartphone segment in the coming time. So till Samsung currently dominates the industry, its market share could shrink when other foldable of different companies are available.
