Manchester City 2-1 PSG: Mbappe, Sterling and Jesus goals highlight a thrilling encounter

Manchester City defeated PSG 2-1 in their second meeting in the group stage, after turning around a 1-goal deficit.

Both teams played swift attacking football, but neither was able to achieve the breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes. Manchester City had several attempts on target in the opening period, and were going forward more often. However, some resolute defending from their backline prevented the hosts from achieving the breakthrough.

Pep Guardiola opted to start the game without a striker yet again. Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan were tasked with making the vertical runs into the box. The German midfielder came mighty close to achieving the breakthrough with a strong effort from the edge of the box. But, his shot hit the crossbar and went out of bounds.

The second half saw Paris Saint-Germain open the scoring in the game courtesy of Kylian Mbappe. Messi’s cross was deflected into the path of the Frenchman after a one-two with Ander Herrera. The striker blasted the shot between Ederson’s legs to give the visitors the lead.

But their advantage would last only twelve minutes. Raheem Sterling tapped in a cross from Rodri, which was left by substitute Gabriel Jesus. 13 minutes later, City earned the lead after Gabriel Jesus beat Keylor Navas. Bernardo Silva received and played a cross to Jesus from the left, and the Brazilian’s shot on goal was enough to put his team ahead.

Jesus has now surpassed Ronaldinho’s goal tally in the Champions League, and has also become Manchester City’s third-highest Champions League goalscorer.

Both teams can rest easy knowing that they have qualified for the next round after Leipzig defeated Club Brugge 5-0.
